The Pass It On Award was initiated by Bass Pro Shops, and continued by NYSOWA. This annual award honors the active member of NYSOWA who has done the most to “pass on” our outdoor heritage This writer is honored with a plaque at the Annual Conference and his or her name is recorded in the Annual Directory along with previous winners.
NYSOWA has recognized the fact that it is vital to pass on our outdoor heritage, including the understanding of the role of conservation and an interest in our outdoor sports. This can be done in a number of ways such as creating awareness through writing, helping organizations that promote these activities, or directly being involved in mentoring and educating.
This year’s Pass It On Award winner, Christopher Paparo, is a marine biologist who loves to hunt and fish. He has helped pass on this knowledge and love of the outdoors in many ways, including his numerous semi- nars which deal with a variety of subjects. These have educated and inspired both young and old who gain an understanding of the issues as well as igniting a curiosity and passion for the outdoor world.
As a wildlife photographer his stunning photos play a large part in attracting attention to the complexities of outdoor life, and the enjoyment of hunting, fishing and other outdoor sports. They also help illustrate the is- sues or problems that are faced in the marine world of Long Island. He writes a monthly column for “On the Water” magazine. He also is a freelance writer for several publications. All of these popular writings expose people to the outdoor world, whether the enjoyment of the outdoor world, the skills that are helpful, or the serious issues that people may not be aware of.
He is also a licensed falconer and his demonstrations and seminars are always very popular. This has intro-duced many people to the complex world of predator and prey. It is one more way that he gains attention and opens people’s eyes to the realities of the outdoor world.
The New York State Outdoor Writers’ Association is proud to present the 2019 Pass It On Award to Chris Paparo.
